May 14, 2008 Austin’s hot Latin rock band Del Castillo returned to The Steel Penny (2412 College Hills, San Angelo) Friday night with a new show and new songs. The band is furiously working on their next album. So they’ve been busy since the last time we saw them in May 2007.
Guitarist Rick del Castillo was awarded a “Gold Award” for his original score he wrote for the short film “Killing Snakes” at the Park City Film Festival. The neatest part of working on the movie was the recording of the soundtrack took place at Great Britain’s Abbey Road Studios, home of you-know-who.
The band has also changed their show a bit. Rick and brother Mark now stand instead of sit during the performance. “It brings so much more energy to our show,” Rick says. The music was just as tight, but the standing guitarists did provide more action on stage. Missing Friday evening was the percussionist Carmelo Torres. That put the pressure on drummer Mike Zeoli. Zeoli looked like Animal from the Muppets he was playing so furiously. By the end of the show, he was drenched in sweat. But that was before Del Castillo was joined by special guests at the end of their last set.
Henry, Jo Jo and Ringo Garza of San Angelo's own Los Lonely Boys joined them on stage. Henry, Mark and Rick had a guitar duel, and Ringo provided Mike a much needed hand keeping up with them on the drums. Before long, Mark stole the bass from Del Castillo bassist Albert Besteiro who became a one-man paparazzi recording the event on camera.
Who won the duel? I was impressed with Henry’s proficiency. He won me over with his ability to keep up with the del Castillo brothers. But do you really think ANYONE can best Del Castillo? But Henry wasn’t ready to give up. He egged them on for “just one more” and the bands closed the night with an amazing jam session seen only at a place like The Steel Penny.
Enjoy the pictures!
