The band sports a name as unusual as its sound. With a set list including “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Where Can My Baby Be?” and a spoof on “Deep in The Heart of Texas,” which made fun of redneck stereotypes, the Subs had an unlikely audience dancing and jamming to their low-end buzz. The band was excellent. Upon closer investigation, they were even better. Headed by frontman Buster Crash, the band includes bassist Lefty DeMarco, “kicking your ass single-handedly.” DeMarco plays with intense skill—without a left hand to hold down the fret board!

What began in 2000 with a simple gift of a guitar made possible by his grandfather has led Drew Kennedy down the winding road that he travels today. Del Castillo is a sextet. Two brothers, Rick and Mark del Castillo are the heart of the show with their technically and musically proficient acoustic guitar duet. Behind them, two percussionists keep the Latin beat alive. Carmelo Torres plays to bongos and Mike Zeoli carefully leads the beat from a single drum set. They combine their efforts into what sounds like a two-man drumline. What makes the beat so good is the pure musicianship of the percussion package. They play soft; they play loud, varying the volume and beats as if they were backing a symphonic orchestra.

Stage names pretty much define this Texas “garage-a-billy” band: Alotof Rockowski plays the bass, Johnny Cat stands up while jammin’ on the drums, and Clem Hoot, a Norwegian, is the lead guitarist and lead vocalist. Well, they all do vocals. Clem Hoot explains the “garage-a-billy” sound: “It’s not so traditional. It does have the influences of Johnny Cash and Hank Williams—but then again it also has The Ramones, Dead Kennedys, and Sex Pistols, and all the great punk rockers.” More here (with Podcast): www.sanangelolive.com/node/3549.

Miles From Nowhere was formed in the summer of 2004 when Merrol Ray decided he was through with being a guitar for hire and knew it was time to do his own thing. With a few phone calls, the genesis of what would become Miles From Nowhere was conceived. Merrol found himself a drummer then called his younger cousin Adam. He knew Adam would be interested because he would occasionally bring his guitar over and sing parts of songs that he had learned. Practicing in Merrol's Dad's welding shop, they began auditioning bass players with none quite working out.

Collins, who plays a unique kind of country-alt/Americana, is a little bit of a newcomer to the Texas music scene, having spend some years pursuing a degree in business and finance from The University of Texas. But in 2005, his music gained greater heights for the 29-year-old from Houston: first in the release of his debut album "Something Better" (Fat Caddy Records, 2005) and then, just a few months later, when his band played the 2005 Austin City Limits Music Festival to a standing-room-only crowd.
