What do you get when you mix a jazz, country, and rock sound with four music majors from the University of North Texas in Denton? You get an up-and-coming Texas country music group that call themselves the Eli Young Band. With influences of Tom Petty, Aerosmith, and Hall & Oates, the group crosses rock with soul sounds and good old Texas country lyrical poetry. “I wouldn’t exactly label us as country or rock. While we’ve been influenced by artists in each of those genres, we lean more towards Alt Country. More here: www.sanangelolive.com/node/67. On Rich O'Toole?

Perhaps some very important people are thinking he and his boys are going to go far. He is a little Pat Green mixed in with Motley Crue. Don't mis his duo with his star guitar player, Luke Leverett. Just don't ask them to play "Dancing Queen" by Abba.

Miles From Nowhere was formed in the summer of 2004 when Merrol Ray decided he was through with being a guitar for hire and knew it was time to do his own thing. With a few phone calls, the genesis of what would become Miles From Nowhere was conceived. Merrol found himself a drummer then called his younger cousin Adam. He knew Adam would be interested because he would occasionally bring his guitar over and sing parts of songs that he had learned. Practicing in Merrol's Dad's welding shop, they began auditioning bass players with none quite working out.

Collins, who plays a unique kind of country-alt/Americana, is a little bit of a newcomer to the Texas music scene, having spend some years pursuing a degree in business and finance from The University of Texas. But in 2005, his music gained greater heights for the 29-year-old from Houston: first in the release of his debut album "Something Better" (Fat Caddy Records, 2005) and then, just a few months later, when his band played the 2005 Austin City Limits Music Festival to a standing-room-only crowd.

Zack Huckabee is also no stranger to Blaine’s Pub or San Angelo. As a youngster, Zach Huckabee was forever playing around with his grandmother’s guitars and at ten years old she finally made him a deal: Learn to play one and it’s yours. A month later Zach had his first axe and he’s never looked back; coming a long way from his first few cords, to learning his first song, a Bob Willis tune, entitled “Deep Water,” to the present, where he tours with a tight threesome, playing the country music circuit.

The Hell Caminos are a Psychobilly band hailing from Honolulu, Hawaii. Their debut CD "Through the Day And Through the Night" shows their extreme versatility. Easily moving from rockabilly into punk into swing, they show you what it's like living on sleep-deprivation, caffeine, and women. Consisting of Michael Camino (upright bass), Nick Danger (guitar), and Handsome Jack (skins), they bring you into their world, full of voodoo roads, slinky dames, and cheap honkytonks. Their music is astounding.

Kyle Park has already accomplished a lot for a young man of 22. At the tender age of 17, he participated in a walk-on performance on the top-rated Sammy and Bob radio show in Austin (KVET-FM). Since then, Kyle's songs have been in rotation on the playlist while the band is considered by many in the business as one that will go places in the competitive Texas Music scene. The single "Somebody's Trying to Steal My Heart,” off his first CD Big Time, continues to get a large amount of airplay and has become a favorite among Texas Music fans.

The rush of rock-n-roll can be powerfully addictive and with Adrenaline Factor at the wheel, it’s sure be a white-knuckle ride. Fueled by high-octane riffs and boozy bad-boy lyrics howled by Lee "Bon"Scott, Adrenaline Factor’s self titled debut is a tire-screeching soundtrack for cruising and carousing. Songs like “Wrong Number” and “Boozin’ Susan” ratchet up the voltage of AC/DC while “Seven Beer Bitch” echoes with a Van Halen-esque guitar shuffle.

Start: 10:30 pm
End: 11:59 pm

You don’t see a rock band very often that features a violinist—much less one that also boasts a cello player and a keyboardist—and while six is a lot of people to pile on a stage the size of the Steel Penny’s, it was definitely a treat in the form of ear candy. The band had a repertoire of tracks that kept the listener engaged, and a power to convey feeling more concisely with the appropriate medium.

Josh has come a long way since playing on tailgates at the local rodeos. He joined his first band in early 2003 playing local honky-tonks and bars. Most recently he had the privilege of playing with the Southern Breeze Band out of Liberty, Texas. Southern Breeze being one of the most popular Texas Swing Bands in the state gave Josh the stage time and experience needed to stretch out on his own and pursue a life long dream.

The Captain Legendary Band blends several elements of roots American music and classic country. Their style also merges traditional, progressive folk, bluegrass, and southern rock into a brew that pleases even skeptics of country music. Originally from Baton Rouge, LA, the band has developed a loyal following throughout the Southeast as well as in Texas. Fans appreciate their vintage style and honest story telling. Talented songwriters and entertainers, their live shows are a high energy party where everyone has a good time.

This band is excellent. Upon closer investigation, they were even better. Headed by frontman Buster Crash, the band includes bassist Lefty DeMarco, “kicking your ass single-handedly.” DeMarco plays with intense skill—without a left hand to hold down the fret board! Using just the “nub” of his left arm, DeMarco depressed the strings with such a speed and talent he could have had two sets of working fingers at the end of that one arm, instead of none. From their last show here: I’d never heard them cheer so loud, but Saturday night, at The Steel Penny, Mothers Anthem played a set that could make any person’s leg shake. The chairs had been cleared and the floor was packed full; you had to wonder if these guys knew what it was like to write a bad song. More with a Podcast: www.sanangelolive.com/node/4077.

Rock-n-roll is about to get blasted by a fabulous New Disaster and the misfits behind the trigger make no apologies for the wreckage. "I want to play rock-n-roll that's young, dangerous and heavy," says guitarist and singer Natchet Taylor. "I want music to be utterly depraved and beautiful like Guns N Roses, Rose Tattoo, the Stooges and the Dead Boys." For more, see www.myspace.com/newdisasteratx.

Their music is a provocative blend of rock, R&B and hip-hop, seemingly having evolved from ‘old school’ roots. An example of this odd, but alluring musical concoction is evident in their modern rendition of the Beatle’s classic, “Eleanor Rigby.” More here: www.sanangelolive.com/node/898.

Fueled by Keith Irish’s unique bass style, drummer David Irish’s screams, and lead singer/guitarist Karl Irish’s guitar work, the band blends influences from Gene Vincent to the Stooges. All three members are brothers with the last name Irish, hence The Irish Brothers. The band has had their current line-up since September 1998, though brothers Karl and Keith have been playing together ever since Keith picked up the bass about ten years ago. Since then, they've been spreading their music across the country.

Having perfected the hard rock template by the late '70s with their trademark fusion of bluesy rhythm, crunchy riff and shoutalong chorus, AC/DC have been victim to 30 years of bare face rip-offs. Rarely, however, has a band sounded so gleefully exuberant in recycling old tricks as Broken Teeth do on this latest barnstorming release. Leading from the front, vocalist Jason McMaster, a bona fide monster of rock himself, has that rare duality of veteran expertise and the vitality of a man half his age.

A review of their last show at The Penny: It’s a custom you’ve likely seen and/or taken part in at other bars around town, but Saturday night at the Steel Penny, one patron took to table dancing just before Vallejo appeared on stage to rock the house. The mood of the night followed in these wobbly footsteps. It was an evening of released inhibitions, and our dancer would see another opportunity to perform. As is Vallejo custom, the Steel Penny stage met its capacity when on the last song men, women, and even grandmas took their chance to dance with the band.
