U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Eagle Pass Station arrested a Mexican national, convicted of sexual assault of a child, said a press release Tuesday.
“Our agents are committed to keeping our communities safe,” said Chief Patrol Agent Rodolfo Karisch, U.S. Border Patrol, Del Rio Sector. “The apprehension of convicted sex offenders is one of the many ways we accomplish this goal.”
On February 8, Vidal Gomez-Soto, a 29-year-old Mexican national, was apprehended by Eagle Pass Border Patrol agents patrolling the Rio Grande River in Eagle Pass. During processing, agents discovered that, in 2009, Gomez-Soto was convicted of sexual assault of a child in Houston. Gomez-Soto was sentenced to two years incarceration and served one year; subsequently, Gomez-Soto was ordered removed from the U.S. in May of 2010.
According to the press release, Gomez-Soto faces a charge of illegal re-entry after deportation – 8 USC § 1326 – which carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison, and his prior order of removal will be reinstated.
The Del Rio Border Patrol Sector is part of the Joint Task Force-West South Texas Corridor, which leverages federal, state and local resources to combat transnational criminal organizations.
