Guest Artist to Present Work at ASU

SAN ANGELO, TX - Angelo State University will present an exhibit of contemporary paintings by Fort Worth-based artist Jim Woodson, the featured guest for ASU’s 2016 Henry Edwards Distinguished Lectureship in Art, beginning Monday, Aug. 29, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

The exhibit will be housed in the EFA Building’s Gallery 193 and will be open for free public viewing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through September 30th.

On Wednesday, September 28, Woodson will conduct a free public gallery talk about the exhibit at 3:30 p.m., also in Gallery 193.

On Thursday, September 29, Woodson will be the featured speaker for the Henry Edwards Distinguished Lectureship in Art. His presentation, titled “About Time,” will run from 3-4:30 p.m. in the C.J. Davidson Conference Center inside the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. A reception with refreshments will follow the lecture, which is also open free to the public.

A professor emeritus of art for Texas Christian University, Woodson was named Texas State Artist of the Year in 2013 by the Texas Commission on the Arts. His figure and landscape paintings, which draw inspiration from the high deserts of the southwest, have elements of realism, expressionism, surrealism and even impressionism. His works have been displayed in more than 30 solo exhibitions and more than 50 group exhibitions, from Dallas to New York, Santa Fe, N.M., and Florence, Italy. His works are in a number of private and public permanent collections, including those of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, Amarillo Art Center, El Paso Museum of Art, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and San Antonio Museum of Art.

A native of Waco, Woodson has a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from TCU.

The Henry Edwards Distinguished Lectureship in Art is an outgrowth of the Edwards Family Trust, established in 1992 by Joseph Henry Edwards and Winona Edwards of San Angelo to provide funding for the art program in ASU’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts. In addition to the lectureship, the Edwards Family Trust supports scholarships for outstanding visual art students and an artist residency program.
