San Angelo Farmers Market hosts 2nd Melon Fest July 23
Last week’s Melon Fest went so well – and the bumper crop of watermelons and cantaloupes is so huge – that the Concho Valley Farmers Market will host a Melon Fest for a second straight Saturday from 7 a.m. until noon July 23.
Many of the vendors, who come from a 75-mile radius around San Angelo, will be offering locally grown melons for sale during the event, along with other seasonal fruits, vegetables and plants under the Farmers Market Pavilion at 609 S. Oakes St., across from Fort Concho.
Additionally, there will be live music and door prizes.
The Farmers Market has been conducting its thrice-weekly sales on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays since early May. The selection includes homegrown tomatoes, Fredericksburg peaches, okra, peppers, corn, cucumbers, greens (including lettuce, spinach and collards), radishes, carrots, turnips, garlic, leeks, beets, shelled pecans, honey, farm-fresh eggs, indoor and outdoor plants, onions, and herbs such as basil, thyme, cilantro, parsley and rosemary.
The farmers market charges customers $1 for a bundle or a bowl of produce.
A key ingredient for tasty melons is heat, which yields a greater sweetness in the fruits. San Angelo has officially recorded more than 50 days this year of daily high temperatures of 100 degrees or more.
Interested farmers can join the market for $15 or $20, which allows them to set up a stand for $5 or $10 at each sale.
The market will hold its sales until the first fall freeze.
