Turning San Angelo City Park into Harmony Park
There is a push to improve the City Park in San Angelo by placing musical instruments there. The effort is a brainchild of Cynthia Jordan, San Angelo's most famous songwriter.
Jordan made her mark on the world by writing the epic hit "Jose Cuervo (You are a Friend of Mine)." The song was the country single of the year in 1983, performed by Shelley West. According to Jordan, distiller Tequila Cuervo La Rojeña of Mexico benefited more from the sales boost of the Jose Cuervo tequila brand than she ever did from writing the song.
Today her plan is to renovate San Angelo's City Park located behind Sealy Flats (200 Block Magdalen St./W. Twohig) with music.
She proposes placing outdoor instruments there that are permanent structures, mounted into the ground like traditional playground equipment. And children can play music on them, in harmony. (See photos).
It's unique, for sure. Jordan also has a tourism angle. "It’s all about this community coming together for improving tourism. It's a place unlike no other, where tourists can take their kids to a place like 'harmony park'," she says. "It gives that warm, fuzzy, and mushy vibe to downtown."
The project, known as Harmony Park (see video), has a budget of $70,000 for the playground instruments and construction. Jordan says she has received excellent feedback and support, and now is looking for funding.
The equipment vendor is Free Notes Harmony Park. Interested in seeing a Harmony Park happen in downtown San Angelo? Contact Cynthia Jordan, cyntiasmusic@yahoo.com or by phone (615) 948-5454.
