DNA Analysis Identifies Human Remains of Missing Big Spring Man

 

According to a press release from Howard County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called out to a remote area in the northeast portion of the county in reference to possible human skeletal remains. Upon arrival, deputies conducted an initial investigation of the scene and removed several bones that were believed to be human. The bones were sent to the Anthropology Department at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas for analysis.

The Howard County Sheriff’s Office was recently notified by the University of North Texas that through DNA analysis, the University discovered the remains are that of 53-year-old Jose Mendez Cuellar Jr. of Big Spring, Texas.

In December of 2009, Cuellar was reported missing to the Big Spring Police Department.

At this time, the cause of death is unknown. The Howard County Sheriff’s Office and Big Spring Police Department are currently conducting a joint investigation of the case.

At this time, Cuellar’s family has been notified. No further information is available.
