December 11, 2007Clad in pajamas and drowned in books, students cram their faces and their brains as this first night of exam week draws to a close. It’s on Monday night, and the employees of Angelo Place Apartments are in the complex’s clubhouse, flipping pancakes.
The event is one of many hosted by the management for tenants. But this particular evening has greater turnout than many others:
Angelo Place seems to have hit home for their residents.
“We’ve had about 25 to 30 people show up,” Leasing agent and pancake flipper Nate French says.
“And we’ve made about 150 pancakes,” Opal Tribble chimes in.
Angelo Place hosts a movie night every Thursday in the clubhouse during the winter, and at poolside during the summer. Once a month, the complex holds a "big" event, usually a dinner. Annually, they really go all out, hosting an event in the summertime for which they call in media. In June, Angelo Place had two cast members of MTV’s "The Real World" come to the complex.
While Angelo Place is open to non-students, the majority of tenants are currently enrolled at ASU. The mode of living resembles that of dorm life, where up to four roommates share a common living area and kitchen, but have their own bedroom and bath spaces.Monday's late-night relief has run until 1 a.m. Among pancakes and orange juice, residents also pick up brown paper grab-bags with cokes and candy for an added sugar rush.
"We want to help out the students who are studying for finals," French says. "We want to do things that’ll get their minds off studying and give them a break for a little while," turning his flapjack so as not to exceed that perfect shade of golden-brown.
