See map: Google MapsFort Worth native Ryan Turner followed the rule book for breaking into the Texas country music scene: He went to A&M in the mid- ‘90s, when the music was gaining traction. “I remember when people were going nuts over Robert Earl Keen,” Turner says, “and Pat Green, [at] really small clubs.”
Like the Dixie Chicken. Turner says he majored in “poultry science” frequenting that watering hole (Turner made a 1.67 during the semester he was at A&M). Turner flocked to Nashville before Texas women and the prospect of finishing school at Southwest Texas (now TexasState) while pursuing his music career beckoned him to San Marcos.
Turner’s music is funky with soul. He has a wide range of influences to credit. “I have a sister who was in high school in the ‘80s, so I caught all that hard rock and pop that I had to listen to with her,” Turner says. “And my dad’s always been a classic country lover; he likes new country [like] GeorgeStrait, so, I got it all. I’m lover of all kinds of music.” Hear a Podcast interview at www.sanangelolive.com/node/2658.
