October 2007 LIVE! in print

Where San Angelo is concerned, the 1940s were considered a boom time, and that heyday had a lot to do with wool. Because wool was a necessary war effort commodity, ranchers and shearers were excluded from the draft. And because this area was among the nation’s largest wool and mohair producers, life was pretty good here even while the nation as a whole was enduring sacrifices to support the war effort.
Local lore has it that Miss Hattie was a 19th century local entrepreneur who specialized in the service industry and that her business was connected to banking.
The Wilkins’ San Angelo creation is aptly named In Vino Veritas (2007 Knickerbocker Rd., San Angelo). The translation of the Latin name means “there is truth in wine.” And it is a name that seems to fit perfectly with the Wilkins’ vision. The Stadium Lanes store carries literally 1,000s of varieties of wines and premium ales and beers. “But you won’t find Coors Lite here,” quipped Belinda.
The most visible venture of the downtown San Angelo volunteers to date is the “Alleyscapes” project where Downtown San Angelo, Inc. commissioned artists to paint murals in dozens of otherwise drab downtown alleyways. A group of local artists called “Art in Uncommon Places” have played a big part in the Alleyscapes project. But their most ambitious project to date will be unveiled Oct. 13, Saturday, during the Art-Ober-Fest festival.
It’s a morbid thought (but then, it is Halloween): How will you die? Sure, you’ve probably heard that heart disease and cancer are likely to kill you if you live long enough, but you probably wouldn’t guess that “accidents” rank so high on the list of local top killers. Lung diseases also seem to prove especially deadly in San Angelo.
