Editor’s Note: I had originally solicited the response of this Texas-born, deployed soldier for a story on the Vatican’s recently proclaimed “new sins” for the modern age. I asked the soldier how he reconciled his faith with his service in what some might consider a violent war. His response was way more eloquent than the question, however, and stands on its own. His identity is shielded to avoid any censure.

Nearly 40 percent of live births in San Angelo are to unwed mothers, five percent above the state average. Finding a solution to this problem isn’t that easy because the whole issue of premarital sex is wrapped into conflicting moral, religious, and ultimately hardheaded ideological differences, even here in San Angelo.

Whether we are winning or losing in Iraq is open to debate, but it's clear that our national conversation about the war has begun to fail. Today our elected leaders, our most influential commentators, and even ordinary Americans chatting among themselves at work or at their dinner tables, have begun to repeat their lines like wind-up dolls.
