Robert E. Lee Middle School Has a New Name

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo ISD school board made a final decision regarding the name change of Robert E. Lee Middle School.

The board meeting, held on Dec. 14, was a nearly three hour event that settled San Angelo’s Civil War.

The name choices presented by people of the community were Mary Owens and Maj. Troy Gilbert.

SAISD Board Members let the public give their thoughts but at the end of the meeting the board ultimately made the decision.

The first choice the board nominated was San Angelo Middle School. It failed to pass 4-3.

The next choice was Lone Star Middle School. That choice was approved 5-2 and will be the new name of the middle school.

During the nominations by the board there was a majority feeling expressed of not naming the school after a person.

Students and Staff of Lone Star Middle School will choose the mascot when they return to school in Jan.
