Angelo State Identifies Student Found Deceased in Residence Hall

SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State University on Monday identified the student who was found deceased in a campus residence hall as Robert “RJ” King, a freshman Agricultural Science and Leadership major from Caldwell.

ASU first announced the student’s death last week, stating there was no indication of any ongoing threat to the campus community.

In a follow-up statement, the Office of the Dean of Students confirmed King’s identity and said an Angelo State flag will be hung in his memory inside the Houston Harte University Center. ASU also plans to honor him during the Ram Remembrance Ceremony in Homecoming Week 2026.

King graduated from Caldwell High School in May 2025 before enrolling at Angelo State this fall. According to his obituary, he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, shooting and hiking, and worked for several farmers and landowners throughout high school. He was most recently employed with Schwartz Boys Produce and Meats in San Angelo.

“Our sincere condolences go to Robert’s family and everyone who knew him,” the university stated.

ASU reminded students, faculty and staff that support services are available. Students may contact ASU Counseling Services at 325-942-2371 or schedule an appointment at angelo.edu/counseling. Faculty and staff may access support through the Employee Assistance Program.

No additional information about the cause of death has been released.
