Hawks and Lady Hawks Winners on Friday Night

WALL, TX — The Wall Hawks (14-8)(7-2) and Lady Hawks (23-4)(8-2) hosted the Clyde Bulldogs (17-9)(5-4) and Lady Bulldogs (13-17)(4-7) at Wall High School on Friday night, Jan. 28. The Lady Hawks handled their business and came away with another decisive victory, 62-33. However, the Hawks fell behind early in the second half and had to roar back in the 4th quarter to secure their win, 47-43.

LADY HAWKS 62 LADY BULLDOGS 33

The Lady Hawks controlled this game from tip-off to the final buzzer. The Lady Bulldogs did their best to keep the game close and played hard, but Wall proved too much to handle. The Lady Hawks’ defense held Clyde to just five points in the first quarter and led 27-13 at the break.

The Ladies came out of the locker rooms on fire and put up 35 points in the second half to win by another considerable margin, 62-33.

Brylyn Watts led the Lady Hawks with 16 points, including 2-2 free throw shooting and ten of her points in the second half. The young Wall star continues to shine during her ‘22-’23 campaign and should be a real threat come playoff time.

The Lady Hawks travel to Ballinger on Tuesday, Jan. 31, to take on the Ballinger Lady Bearcats at 6:15 p.m.

HAWKS 47 BULLDOGS 43

The Hawks got into a dogfight early in their game against Clyde, and that trend continued throughout the game. Implacable defense by both teams kept the scoring to the minimum, and eventually, Wall’s defense won out. Angelo State commit Everson Armstrong took over scoring duties for the Hawks in the first half when he had 10 of the Hawks’ 20 points by halftime. Wall led at the break, 20-17.

However, early in the 3rd quarter, the Hawks found themselves behind by eight points with just over five minutes to go. Clyde went on a run where they seemingly could not miss a shot. Clutch three-point shooting by Lane Stansbury, Caleb Braden, and Jack Duncan pulled the Hawks ahead with less than six minutes to play in the game.

Up by only two points with less than 15 seconds left, the Bulldogs sent Jack Duncan to the line for free throws. He missed them both, but a timely steal and subsequent pass to Armstrong sealed the game. Armstrong sank both free throws after the Bulldogs fouled, and the Hawks won 47-43.

We caught up with Head Coach Travis Dawson after the game, and he gave his thoughts on his team’s performance down the final stretch.

Everson Armstrong led the Hawks with 19 points. When points are tough to come by for this team, Armstrong needs to continue to shoulder most of that load. If he does this, the Hawks will be a dangerous basketball team moving forward into the playoffs.

The Wall Hawks travel to Ballinger on Tuesday, Jan. 31, to take on the Ballinger Bearcats at 7:45 p.m.
