Brady Holds Off Tolar for Share of District Title
BRADY, TX — The Brady Bulldogs hung on for a 20-14 win at home over Tolar on Friday to clinch a share of the District 5-3A Division II title.
Brady’s work isn’t done yet, however, as the Bulldogs will have to travel to play Clifton next week to lock up the No. 1 seed. Both teams are 7-2 overall, and Clifton has only one district loss, which means a loss by Brady would open the door for a first-place tie.
Early also has only one district loss, so Brady could end up sharing the title with two other teams — and the Bulldogs could hurt their playoff seeding — if they don’t beat Clifton next week.
Tolar is actually the defending champion in this district, but the Rattlers only had a 1-2 district record entering the game and didn’t figure to give Brady so much trouble.
The Bulldogs grinded out a 12-0 halftime lead, but Tolar pulled within 20-14 by the end of the third quarter, and Brady had to pitch a fourth-quarter shutout to hold on for the win.
Running back Ashton Taylor had 24 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Sean Jacoby added eight carries for 78 yards and a TD.
Jacoby and Alijah Stark each had interceptions on defense.
Bronte Locks Up Share of District Title
The Bronte Longhorns cruised past the Trent Gorillas 62-12 on Friday to clinch no worse than a share of the District 6-1A Division II title.
With a victory at winless Olfen next week, Bronte will claim its first outright district title since 2011.
Bronte, led by longtime coach Rocky Rawls, improved to 6-3 overall and 3-0 with Friday’s win. Trent fell to 6-3 and 1-2.
Grape Creek Moves Into Third Place With Win Over Merkel
The Grape Creek Eagles completed their regular season with a 35-14 win at home over Merkel on Friday.
Running back Darrell West continued his outstanding season with 29 carries for 294 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Eagles’ offense.
Fullback Sire Garcia added 13 carries for 79 yards and a TD.
Gabe Santillan had a team-high 14 tackles, two tackles for loss and an interception. Konner Linebacker had 11 tackles, two tackles for loss and half a sack.
Grape Creek finished the regular season with a 6-4 overall record and 2-2 mark in District 4-3A Division II, which currently has the Eagles in third place.
If Coahoma beats Merkel next week, Grape Creek will head into the playoffs as the No. 3 seed. If Merkel wins, however, it will force a three-way tie for second place, and Grape Creek will likely move up to the No. 2 seed based on its point differential of plus-15 in its head-to-head matchups with the two teams.
Ballinger Remains Winless in District Play
The Ballinger Bearcats’ playoff hopes took a serious hit Friday with a 26-19 loss at Coleman.
Ballinger wide receiver Hunter Kresta had a big game with seven catches for 146 yards and a TD, and he had an interception on defense.
Ballinger fell to 3-6 overall and 0-4 in District 5-2A Division I, but the Bearcats aren’t eliminated from playoff contention quite yet.
If Ballinger wins at home next week against Hico by 14 points or more — and Coleman loses to Bangs — the Bearcats would win a three-way tie for the fourth and final playoff spot based on point differential.
Coleman improved to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in district with Friday’s win.
Miles Earns First District Win Against Winters
The Miles Bulldogs defeated the Winters Blizzards 38-24 on Friday to earn their first district win and keep their playoff hopes alive.
Miles (2-7 overall, 1-3 in District 7-2A Division II) needs to beat Roscoe next week to have a chance at sneaking into the postseason.
Winters (2-7, 0-4) had a huge game from Mark Moreno. On offense, he had five catches for 104 yards, along with 11 carries for 67 yards. Defensively, he had 17 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Winters’ Coy Martinez was 10-of-22 passing for 255 yards and two TDs. He also had eight carries for 40 yards and two TDs.
Nolan Martinez had three catches for 62 yards and a TD, and Caleb Rutherford hauled in an 89-yard TD pass.
No stats were available for Miles.
Miles will play at Roscoe (2-7, 2-2) next week, while Winters will host Cross Plains (3-6, 1-3).
Wink Routs Eldorado for District Title
The Wink Wildcats rolled to a 47-8 win over Eldorado to claim the District 4-2A Division II title.
Wink improved to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in district, while Eldorado fell to 5-4 and 3-1.
Wink will close out the regular season next week at home against Van Horn. Eldorado will visit McCamey, needing a win to clinch the district’s No. 2 seed.
