Gordon Calvin Dalton, 96, of San Angelo, went to join his Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 16, 2016. He was born October 13, 1919, in Millersview, Texas, to Homer and Sallie Gertrude Hurt Dalton. Gordon married Florence "Baby" Healy on June 23, 1946, in San Angelo, Texas, and they celebrated their 69th Anniversary several weeks before she passed away on July 19, 2015. They were members of First Presbyterian Church, where they both enjoyed the love of their Church family for many years.
Gordon enlisted in the United States Army on August 6, 1940 (Ft. Crockett, Texas) and was stationed in the Panama Canal for two years during WWII, proudly serving his country until October 27, 1945. He returned to San Angelo and married the love of his life, Florence "Baby" Healy. He was employed at Gandy's Creamery for 37 years, and after he retired he began his second career as Ranch Foreman for Dr. Roy Glass and Robert "Bodey" Langford. He truly enjoyed the great outdoors, working the ranch, and time spent with the Glass family.
Gordon was a founding member of over 50 years at the American Legion, Post 32, where he served as Commander in 1966, 1967, and 1968. Gordon, along with fellow American Legion brethren, were instrumental in developing the Veterans section of Belvedere Cemetery for the interment of veterans needing a final resting place. He was also a member of the Knights of the Round Table and the Lions Club. Gordon spent countless hours with Baby at both the West Texas Boys' Ranch and Mended Hearts.
Gordon and Baby loved to dance and were members of La Paloma Dance Club. They also enjoyed square dancing, hunting, and participating in the Rattlesnake Round-Up for many years. His many hobbies included collecting spurs, arrowheads, and studying the history of Texas. His most enjoyable pastime in recent years has been attending "Saturday Morning Breakfast Club" gatherings with his dearest friends. Gordon was blessed with many special friends he cherished at the Rio Concho Terrace. He was preceded in death by his wife, Baby; parents; four brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his sister-in-law, Nancy Woodard, Denton, TX; brothers-in-law, Charles Dennis, San Angelo, and Jessie Woodard, Sweeny, TX; as well as generations of nieces and nephews, whom he and Baby loved dearly.
A time of visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at the Johnson's Funeral Home, San Angelo. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, July 22, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church, San Angelo with Rev. Bill Proctor officiating. Military honors will follow in the Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens, San Angelo. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the giver's charity of choice.
Pallbearers are Robert Allison, Gilbert Colmenero, Jerry Cornelius, Kelly Eaves, Rex Enochs, and Robert "Bodey" Langford. Honorary Pallbearers are Charles Dalton and all members of the Saturday Morning Breakfast Club.
