At the age of 12, Jack moved with his family to Sheffield, Texas, where he later graduated from Iraan High School in the Class of 1953. He continued his education at Texas Tech, SWTSTC, and Sam Houston State University, ultimately earning his Master’s degree in Education.
Jack dedicated his life to coaching and mentoring young people. He began his career in Edna, Texas, where he coached for two years before spending 31 years in San Angelo. During that time, he was a coach of the Central High School State Champion football team. Jack cared deeply for the students he coached and always sought to lead by example, guided by his strong Christian faith.
In May of 1957, Jack married the love of his life, Janet Rylander, in Buda, Texas. Together, they shared nearly 69 years of marriage filled with adventure, devotion, and cherished memories.
Outside of his career, Jack found great joy in ranching at his property in Melvin, Texas, where he raised Beefmaster cattle and Dorper sheep. He had a love for the outdoors and adventure, enjoying water skiing, snow skiing, motorcycle riding, camping, and fly fishing in Colorado. He was also a longtime and devoted member of The Heights Church.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Gayla Huff; and his son, Clif Cauthen.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janet Cauthen; his daughter, Valarie Look and her husband David; his son, Scott Cauthen and his wife Stephanie; his grandchildren, Jon Look, Bobby Look, Matt Look, and Ryland Cauthen; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Johnson’s Funeral Home.
A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at The Heights Church. A private burial will be held at Johnson’s Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jack’s memory to The House of Faith – San Angelo, Meals for the Elderly, The Heights Church, or a charity of your choice.
