Gretel Hoehns Garza, 57, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2026.
Memorial service will be Friday, August 28, 2026 at 6:00 PM at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. Graveside service will be Saturday, August 29, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.
Gretel was born March 1, 1969 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She graduated high school from Abilene High and then pursued her dream of becoming a nurse, graduating as a RN from South Plains Community College.
Gretel was a remarkable woman whose life was defined by love, compassion, strength, and devotion to her family and everyone she cared for. As a Registered Nurse, Gretel dedicated her life to helping others. Caring for people was not simply her profession, it was a reflection of the beautiful heart she carried and applied that to her everyday job as a hospice nurse. Gretel was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, Marcus Garza, with whom she shared 18 years of marriage, and a loving mother to her, Amanda Evans, and her son Matthew Evans. Her family was her greatest blessing, and she gave them a lifetime of unconditional love, comfort, and cherished memories.
There are many things we will remember about Gretel; her beautiful heart, her strength, her compassion, her dedication as a nurse, and the love she gave so freely. But perhaps what we will remember most of all her hugs. Gretel's hugs had a way of saying everything words could not. They brought comfort when someone was hurting, warmth when someone needed reassurance, and love simply because she wanted you to know you were cared for.
She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Jackie; her father, David Lee Hoehns; her brother-in-law, Gregg Stewart; and her nephew, Zecharyah Garza Rios. We find comfort knowing that Gretel is now reunited with those she loved and missed so dearly.
Gretel is survived by her loving husband, Marcus Garza; her daughter, Amanda Evans; her son, Matthew Evans; her mother, Louann Hoehns; two brothers, David Lee and his wife; Jason Gibson and his wife; her mother Betty Gibson; three sister-in-laws, Jessica Graves and husband Freddie, Irma Stewart, Norma Garcia; one brother-in-law, Marciano Garza and wife Yolanda; mother-in-law, Nelia Garza; father-in-law, Marciano Garza, Sr.; a very special nephew, Brandon Valdez, who offered so much compassion and care to Gretel while she was ill; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends whom she loved dearly.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and entire staff on the 5 north-west at Shannon Hospital. Thank you for the compassion, care, kindness and dignity you showed Gretel and her family during such a difficult time. Your dedication and care will never be forgotten.
Rest peacefully, Gretel. You were deeply loved, you will be forever missed, and your beautiful legacy of love and compassion will never be forgotten.
