Berta Sandoval Rodriquez passed from this life on Saturday, September 5, 2026, with her son Gabriel and her sister Lucia by her side. Berta was born on Valentine's Day in 1950 to Gregorio Calderon Sandoval and Leonor Hernandez Sandoval. She grew up in San Angelo, the youngest of fourteen children.
By trade, Berta was a caregiver, caring for elderly patients in their homes and providing them with dignity and independence in their final years. She continued this work until she physically could no longer do so. Her real calling, however, was that of family historian. Berta knew the generations of each individual branch of the Sandoval family. She could tell you the names of her siblings' children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Everyone knew to expect a birthday call or text first thing in the morning. This was her way and her legacy.
Berta loved Tejano music and spending time with her sisters and family. Though she no longer drove, Berta valued her independence and loved being out and about. In years past, she and her sister Irene-her sidekick and companion-could often be found riding the city bus around San Angelo together. One of Berta's favorite stops while out and about was Chick-fil-A. If she was at home, she could often be found visiting Dora and her girls. During football season, Berta especially enjoyed mixing it up with all the Cowboys fans in the family, throwing in a little trash talk-all done with love.
Berta was preceded in death by her daughter, Lucia Smith, and her parents. Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Isabel S. Wuertemburg; Rebeca S. Garcia and her spouse, Jose Garcia; Mariana Sandoval; Erene (Irene) S. Hernandez; and Dora S. Jasso. Her brothers who preceded her in death were Juan Sandoval
and his spouse, Martha; Gregorio (George) Sandoval; David Sandoval; Guillermo (Willie) Sandoval; Enrique (Henry) Sandoval; and Daniel (Danny) Sandoval. She was also preceded in death by her nephew, Marcus Sandoval; her niece, Christina Garcia; and her special friend, Sylvia.
She is survived by her sisters, Victoria H. Sandoval and Lucia De La Rosa and her spouse, Willie. Also surviving her are her children, Fernando Rodriquez, Jr. and his spouse, Irma; Ylonda Wells; Gabriel Sandoval and his spouse, Michelle; and Denise Fierro.
Her surviving grandchildren are Nicholas (Raquel) Hernandez; Darian (Javier) Marta; Shi-Ann (Carol-Ann) Arrey; Gabriel D. (Elyssa) Sandoval; Bianca Morales; and Elise Guzman. Her great-grandchildren are Patricia, Andrew, Antonio, Abri, Santiago, Jayden, Miyah, Zoey, Leo, Gabriel Mason, Myles, and Autumn.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Sagecrest, Park Plaza Nursing Home, and Excela Care for the care they provided Berta. A special and loving Thank You is also extended to Tia Lucy and her family, Michelle, Bentura, Esperanza, Lisa, and Raquela for standing in the gap when they were needed most.
Memorial services are pending with Johnson's Funeral Home.
