Wynell Martin Walker, age 89, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2026, in San Angelo, TX, following a well lived life marked by devotion to family, faith, hard work, and the simple joys that brought her happiness.
She had been a resident of San Angelo since moving there from Van Horn in 2010. She was born on March 31, 1937, to John R. and Ruby N. Martin in Quitaque. The oldest of three children, Wynell attended and graduated from Quitaque High School. She later moved to Van Horn where she met and married Floyd Doyle Walker and resided there for 53 years.
Wynell was a devoted Christian and a member of the Church of Christ. She was employed for many years as Van Horn City Secretary and Deputy Tax Assessor, and later as the Tax Assessor/Collector for the Culberson County Independent School District. She also served on the Culberson County Appraisal Review Board, Van Horn City Zoning Board, Culberson County Library Board, Culberson County Hospital Auxiliary and was a long time member of the Twentieth Century Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle, brother Dalton R. Martin, granddaughter Amanda G. Walker, and daughter's in law Elizabeth A. Walker and Lynn M. Walker.
She is survived by her sons, Robert L. Walker of Farmington, New Mexico and Doyle L. Walker of New Braunfels; sister, Johnnie L. Burns of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; grandson, Martin L. Walker of Las Cruces, New Mexico; niece, Schonda Burns of Siloam Springs Arkansas; and nephews, Michael Burns of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and Mark Burns of Bella Vista, Arkansas.
Wynell will be remembered for her kindness to others, her fierce independence and strong work ethic, and her enduring love of her family. Her life touched many, and her memory will continue to live on lovingly in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
A viewing will be held from 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, followed by a service at 11:00 AM at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel in San Angelo. A private family burial will be held on October 8, 2026 in Van Horn Cemetery.
