SAN ANGELO, TX — Sam’s Club is closing 63 of its warehouse stores across the U.S., almost 10 percent of the locations in the 660-store chain. But the San Angelo Sam’s Club was spared. We confirmed that with the Sam’s Club here in San Angelo at 5749 Sherwood Way. Besides that, according to Business Insider, all of the stores slated for closure were scrubbed from the Sam’s Club website this morning.
Only four Sam’s Club warehouse stores in Texas got the ax.
According to Houston’s KHOU channel 11, the local CBS affiliate, three stores were shuttered there before employees arrived for work.
Three stores in Houston were closed. One was axed in San Antonio. Sam’s has 85 stores in Texas.
“After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, we’ve decided to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy. Closing clubs is never easy and we’re committed to working with impacted members and associates through this transition,” Sam’s Club tweeted.
The Dallas Morning News mused that the Houston and San Antonio closures were due to a hyper-competitive market in that region. Houston and San Antonio are particularly strong markets for H-E-B grocery stores.
In San Angelo, H-E-B opened a large store across Sherwood Way from the Walmart-Sam’s Club complex.
Business Insider estimates that each Sam’s Club employs about 175 workers. Ten of the locations will be converted into e-commerce shipping and warehouse hubs, Business Insider reported.

Well thank goodness Sam's is staying open. The only other place in town I know of where you can get a Diet Mountain Dew fountain drink is Taco Bell. And just as soon as Taco Bueno opens up, the Diet Mountain Dew at Taco Bell won't even be enough to entice me to set foot through their doors ever again.......

PermalinkWhen Costco moves in with all of our latest "growth" sams will close. their inventory sucks, there is almost always nearly expired produce there and to be honest sams is old, kind of like our city council. OUTDATED and in need of a remodel. Not to mention your produce is almost always rotten/moldy.
