You Will Buy the Old Standard-Times Building

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The City of San Angelo announced on Monday morning it will begin the process of negotiating the purchase of the Standard-Times building.

Earlier this year the building that has housed the local newspaper for nearly 70 years was placed on the market. Since the pandemic began the newspaper's staff transitioned to a different work model according to a statement released by the company.

The building was listed on the market for more than $1 million.

The one-story building is next to another relatively vacant structure, the former Tom Green County Jail.

After meeting in executive session, Councilman Harry Thomas, representing SMD 3, announced the council was authorizing City Manager Daniel Valenzuela to negotiate the purchase of three buildings that are a part of the former Standard-Times complex for no more than $950,000.

The three buildings were identified as:

  • 14 W. Harris
  • 18 W. Harris
  • 33 W. Harris

The council voted unanimously to approve the negotiations. According to news sources the city intends to use the building to house the San Angelo Police Department in the future.

Our old music store was at 14 E. Harris. It was awesome, and our family was trendsetting, as we were one of the first to go out of business, be dysfunctional, and get divorces all around! Sadly, it is as if my family never existed in Angelo. As a favor, would you check in the old pictures in the old SAST building if you have time. I bet there's still photos around there. Actually nevermind, that's okay. I actually wanted to write the s.a.live bunch to let them know, and yourself, are a terrific writer, and braver than any of the men you work with. Your piece on the awful trump-caused treasonous coup attempt was excellent. And of course, the creepy commenters came out in force. I know it is basically their entire life - complaining on the computer, but they should really get off the right-wing sites.... And the same is true about a huge swath of San Angelo's population.

You rock, and if this message gets through to you, it will be the first time. (Dr. Yantis and Mr. Hyde probably don't want to print my snark at the entire Q/GOP - rethug crowd). Which I can do till I die, no prob. Love your courage amongst right wing moronics. Miles Sr.
