What's Open and Closed on Juneteenth?

SAN ANGELO, TX - As Americans commemorate Juneteenth today, June 19, many will reflect on the historic day when the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free.

Juneteenth National Independence Day, which became a federal holiday in 2021 after President Joe Biden signed it into law, is being celebrated across the nation.

In San Angelo and nationwide, various businesses and services will be closed in observance of the holiday. Here's what residents need to know about what's open and closed on Juneteenth in 2024.

As with most federal holidays, the U.S. Post Office will be closed today. Most banks will also be closed, though ATMs and online banking services remain available. Major banks planning to close on June 19 include Bank of America Corp., JPMorgan Chase and Co., Wells Fargo, and Truist.

Most federal government offices will be closed as well. However, decisions on whether to close city and local government offices are at the discretion of local jurisdictions.

U.S. stock markets will not be operating today, following the federal holiday schedule.

Despite these closures, most businesses and restaurants will remain open on Juneteenth. National retailers planning to operate normally include Walmart, Target, CVS, Walgreens, and H-E-B.
