MENARD, TX — A Menard man was arrested after a trash fire he started during a county burn ban escaped and burned about 500 acres across Menard and Concho counties, the Menard County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Thomas Leonard Williams III was charged with violating a regulation of outdoor burning.
The fire started Sept. 2 when Williams was burning trash at his property on Lost Trail Road in northern Menard County, just south of the Concho County line. The flames spread to neighboring pastures. Williams called 911. Texas A&M Forest Service identified the blaze as the Live Oak Fire. Official records listed it at 502 acres.
It spread from Menard County into Concho County and was contained the morning of Sept. 3. No structures were destroyed, and no injuries were reported.
Agencies that responded included the Menard County Sheriff’s Office, Menard Volunteer Fire Department, Fort McKavett Volunteer Fire Department, Menard Road and Bridge Crew, Hext Volunteer Fire Department, Eden Volunteer Fire Department, Rochelle Volunteer Fire Department, Concho County Sheriff’s Office, McCulloch County officials, Melvin units and the Texas A&M Forest Service.
