High School Football: Christoval Looking for Another Playoff Run

CHRISTOVAL – Even with the change in classification, the Christoval Cougars are still looking to make a playoff run in 2022.

Last season, Christoval went 9-2 overall and 5-0 in district play finishing out the district with two shutouts. They went into the playoffs as the first seed and were primed for a deep playoff run until news broke about their first opponent. 

Last season, Burton was set to enter the playoffs as a first seed. Until the UIL stripped them of seven wins for playing an ineligible player. Even though Burton essentially lost seven games all at once, they were still able to make the playoffs as the fourth seed.

They squared off against the Cougars in Llano and Burton took the lead with under a minute left and Christoval had a chance. Loehman connected with Beau Jolly who broke a tackle and took off towards the goal line only to get tackled about 20 yards shy of victory. 

This year, Christoval returned 6 starters on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Kyle Loehman is in his second season as a starter and ballhawk Cayden Carpenter will lead the secondary. Ketcher Joiner is the lead back and has a punishing running style. Other players looking to contribute are Brock Ratliff and Nicolai Nelson.

The Cougars moved up to 2A-D1 when the UIL realigned this offseason and with it, brings a whole new look to Christoval’s district. This Friday, they will start the season against a familiar opponent in the Eldorado Eagles. Then they will move on to play Grape Creek, Colorado City, Mason, and Brady before hitting district.

The Cougars district this year consists of Reagan County, Sonora, Forsan, Ozona, and Anthony.
