Friday Night High School Football Kicks Off Tonight!

SAN ANGELO- The 2022 High School Football season kicks off tonight and area teams will be looking to start the season off the right way with a win.

Tonight, the COVER1 Crew will be at several games providing highlights, analysis, and coverage of teams from the Concho Valley.

San Angelo Central vs. Killeen Shoemaker

The Kevin Crane led Central Bobcats will travel to Killeen to play the Shoemaker Grey Wolves. The Bobcats return several key pieces of their offense including signal caller Tyler Hill and pass catcher Jacob English. Their offensive line also returns some players including Eric Martinez and Sterling Cumming. Darius Floyd will clean things up from the linebacker position and three seniors bring much needed experience to the secondary. Coach Crane expects big things out of this team and Hill at quarterback.

Shoemaker dropped down into the 5A classification due to the UIL realignment and returns running back Jamarius Stewart and a junior and senior heavy team. Junior athlete Kmare’ Balfour could have a big season at quarterback where Maxpreps has him slotted. Other players to watch are Jerrod Hicks, Malik Esquerra, and defensive linemen To’O To’O Maugaotega and Darrion Burleson.

Lamesa Tornadoes vs. Lake View Chiefs

The Chiefs have an experienced offensive line that will have to protect quarterback Bryce Medley and create lanes for running back Rick Ramirez. Look for Medley to connect with big wide receiver Davashitian Manley and Wyatt Henry. Head Coach Hector Guevara and his squad will look to make the playoffs for a fifth consecutive time.

Lamesa will use superstar Luke Martinez all over the field and on both sides of the ball. Last season, Martinez snagged 8 interceptions on defense and had over 750 yards and 9 touchdowns on offense.

Eldorado Eagles vs. Christoval Cougars

The Battle of 277 takes place in Christoval tonight and will feature a new face on the sidelines. Eldorado hired Chad Tutle to lead the Eagles this season after Jon Longs departure. The Eagles lost key players to graduation and will lean on their defense to try and slow opponents down.

Christoval brings back all-star defender Cayden Carpenter and punisher running back Ketcher Joiner. He’ll have running lanes created by Brock Ratliff and Nicolai Nelson. Head Coach Casey Otho saw significant progress from second year quarterback Kyle Loehman over the offseason.

Abilene TLC Eagles vs. Water Valley Wildcats

Water Valley made the jump up to 2A from six man football this offseason. New head coach Charles Boles only had 4 starters return from last season, but the team does have extra experience playing in the playoffs the last few seasons. Abilene TLC returns 12 starters on both sides of the ball and wear down opponents using their size up front in Zaidryn Moreno-Nobles and Davin Cortez. Look for freshman Jonathan Rico to start at quarterback.

This season, COVER1 has a new format. Instead of one long show, the COVER1 Crew will run three shows. The pregame show will run at 4:00 p.m. during the Daily LIVE! show.
