DETAILS: High School Football Week 2 Kicks Off Tonight!

SAN ANGELO- Week two of high school football begins tonight and COVER1 will be at all the big games.

El Paso Montwood Rams(0-1) vs San Angelo Central Bobcats(0-1)

Central nearly mounted a huge comeback last week against the Shoemaker Grey Wolves but came up short 24-31. The defense had a fumble recovery and an interception that helped keep them in the game.

Last week, Montwood gave up over 500 yards on the ground, so Hill, Brawley, and Barron need to take advantage of the run defense. Midland did not throw the ball much against Montwood so Hill will have to be on the same page as Jacob English this week.

Central needs to win this one. Run the ball behind your leaders on the offensive line and throw when necessary. The Bobcat defense needs to lock down several good receivers. Gio Varela and Diego Oaxaca put up 237 yards and 3 touchdowns last week. Don’t forget about David Alvarez’s 88 yards and his touchdown.

Montwood didn’t run the ball much and only had 52 total rushing yards. It could be a wet one in the Concho Valley so the Ram receivers will have to focus that much harder should it start to rain.

Odessa Permian Panthers (1-0) vs. Waco Midway Panthers (0-1)

Waco Midway quarterback Reid Tedford put up 202 yards with no touchdowns and 1 interception last week and 167 of those passing yards went to Junior Thornton on 10 receptions.

Midway’s running back Dom Hill had a hard time getting things going with 2.3 yards per attempt but had 2 touchdowns on the ground. Permian will have to play sound defense. Mojo had 9 tackles for loss, 9 hurries, and 3 passes defended against Abilene. Their triple option type offense will be tough to stop but Midway has three really good defenders in Adrian Melvin at defensive back, Kannon Clendenin at linebacker, and Ersom Martinez at outside linebacker.

Christoval Cougars (0-1) vs. Grape Creek Eagles (0-1)

Both of these teams are coming off a loss and both sort of mirror each other. Talking with Christoval Coach Casey Otho this week he said his kids are mature enough to not let a loss beat them twice. Last week, Eldorado beat the Cougars 7-0. Otho also knows the offense Grape Creek runs, a single T, will be tough to beat.

For the Cougars defense, they bring an inexperienced group at linebacker and defensive back. With the exception of safety Cayden Carpenter, the two groups have new starters this season. The defensive line will have to handle the Eagles offensive line to stop their offense. For the Cougars, quarterback Kyle Loehman went 8-11 for 33 yards last week and Ketcher Joiner had 90 yards rushing but didn’t get into the endzone.

Grape Creek coach Tanner Thiel said his team cost themselves last week and he also has some kids that need the experience. Scrimmages are different than games and both teams have players that need the playing time for district play.

Cisco Loboes (1-0) vs. Wall Hawks (1-0)

Both teams will grind it out on the ground, especially if it’s raining when the game kicks off. Wall had a massive 575 rushing yards last week with Nathan Pepper and Garrett Guy combining for 294 yrads and 3 touchdowns last week. Four other players also had touchdowns on the ground.

The Wall defense got after it last week with 12 hurries, 9 tackles for loss, and a forced fumble.

Cisco had 305 rushing yards and quarterback Hunter Long went for 138 yards and 3 touchdowns by himself. Running back Trent Huston had 134 yards and a touchdown. Huston also had a short touchdown through the air.

Sterling City Eagles (1-0) vs. Miles Bulldogs (1-0)

Sterling City head coach Trey Sisco said Miles will be a good test for his team this week and said they have reacted really well to the switch from 6-man to 11-man. Miles will have to corral playmaker Johnny Monreal as he had 4 touchdowns last week and handled punt returns.

Miles returned their quarterback, Hayven Book, and he’s got two senior running backs beside him. The Bulldogs also have 3 returning offensive linemen.

The Eagles are only a couple seasons removed from a state championship at the 6-man level. Although it’s a different format of football, your players are still getting that extra playing time in important games.

Sisco said, “In 6-man, if you miss a tackle, you gave up a touchdown,” which isn’t the worst mindset to have in 11-man. But also remember you have other players behind you in 11-man.

Miles was a playoff team last season and this will be a test for the Sterling City Eagles.
