PREVIEW: Bobcats Square off Against Rebels in Big District Matchup this Friday!

SAN ANGELO- The Central Bobcats are currently in first place in district but have a tough matchup this week against the Midland Legacy Rebels.

San Angelo Central (5-2, 2-0) vs. Midland Legacy (3-4, 1-1)

Central won their second district game against the Odessa Bronchos last Friday night as did the Rebels against the Permian Panthers. The Bobcats are riding a four-game winning streak and will look to continue that when they travel to Midland this week.

Everything with Central starts with electric quarterback Tyler Hill who has gone 103-160 for 1,240 yards, 13 touchdowns, and two interceptions. While those are impressive numbers, Hill’s rushing has been instrumental. He’s rushed for 970 yards and 13 touchdowns. The three-headed monster at running back, Tyree Brawley, Aiden Barron, and Jayvion Robinson have combined for 840 yards and 10 touchdowns.

It wouldn’t be right to not give the offensive line credit as they’ve opened up running lanes and helped Central amass 1,855 rushing yards and 24 total touchdowns. In the games against Montwood, Belton, Wylie, and Odessa, the Bobcats had 376, 330, 360, 354 rushing yards respectively. Central also won those four games.

Central hasn’t had the same success through the air but have gotten the job done. Jacob English is back and leads all Central receivers with 288 yards and five touchdowns. Tyler Walker comes in second behind English with 204 yards but no scores. Keevon Rice has gone for 166 yards and four touchdowns. Ben Imler and Jacob Gallegos combined for 306 yards and Imler has three scores.

On the defensive side of things, Darius Floyd is killing it with 60 solo tackls, 36 assists, and 105 total with eight tackles for loss. Floyd also has four sacks, two caused fumbles, and one fumble recovery. Evan Arnold has 64 total tackles, five for loss, and two sacks.

Luke Gould leads the team in interceptions with three of Central’s seven total. They have six fumble recoveries and seven caused fumbles.

The Midland Legacy Rebels got their first win in district last week against Permian 33-25. In the first week of district, the Frenship Tigers went up early and often against the Rebels and at halftime, were up 42-7 over Legacy. The Rebels did come back and outscored Frenship 27-6 in the second half.

Legacy still has a good team, and this will be a fight for Central. Quarterback Marcos Davila has 118-203 for 1,851 for 24 touchdowns and six interceptions. At running back Zeke Luna has been the top back with 750 yards and six touchdowns. Legacy has 934 total rushing yards and Nathaniel Brito, Madden Milloy, Tommy Johnson make up most of the other yardage.

Deonta Sonnier is the go-to guy for Davila and has 548 yards and 10 touchdowns on the season. Central will need to be on their toes as Aiden Serrano, only a sophomore, has 457 yards and six scores. Brex Stevens, Colin Brazzell, and Skyler Wilburn have 765 yards and eight touchdowns combined.

Rebel defender Mario Serrano has 69 total tackles, Esus Robledo, and Jamar Roberson lead the team in tackles and Trace Low along with Chase Barton have seven sacks together. Legacy has Canyon Moses, Damien Johnson, and Roberson who have two interceptions each and the team has 14 passes defended.

There are no common opponents between Central and Legacy.

Both teams have given up almost the same number of points. The Bobcats have given up 253 (36.1 per game) and the Rebels have given up 258 (36.8 per game). They’ve also scored about the same as well with 275 for Legacy and 297 for Central.

This will be a much better matchup for the Bobcats and if Central can put up some points early and keep the Legacy offense off the field, they have a very good chance at winning. But Legacy won’t give up and have the playmakers to put up touchdowns. We could see the return of the shootout and the Bobcat defense will have to step up. The offense will need limit it’s mistakes, run behind the experience of the offensive line, and take chances where necessary.
