Abilene Man Killed In Early Morning Crash

ABILENE, TX -- The Abilene Police Department has confirmed a 53-year-old Abilene man was killed in a crash early Wednesday morning.

According to APD, officers were dispatched to the 5300 blk. of South First Street at approximately 6:00 a.m. for reports of a two-vehicle crash. When officers arrived at the scene they found a 1998 Toyota Tacoma and a Honda Odyssey involved in a crash.

The preliminary investigation revealed Jean-Paul Zihalirwa, 53, and Mbirembano Mwamini, 40, were traveling west on South First Street in the Odyssey when they attempted to turn left towards the center median. The driver of the Tacoma, 24-year-old Skylar Karnas who was also traveling west then struck the driver's side.

The driver, Zihalirwa, was pronounced deceased at the scene, while Mwamini was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Karnas was also taken to the hospital. It does not appear alcohol was a factor in this crash.
