Bicyclist Dies After Being Hit By Box Truck

 

ABILENE, TX – A bicyclist riding down a highway in Abilene was struck and killed by a box truck early Saturday morning.

According to the APD, on June 3, 2023, officers from the APD responded to a pedestrian crash on Highway 80 near Bandera Park St. The crash involved a 28-year-old bicyclist who was hit by a box truck.

The deceased has been identified as Richard Charles Simmons, 28, of Abilene. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The following is a statement from the Abilene Police Department:

On Saturday, June 3, 2023, at 5:12 a.m. the Abilene Police Department was called in reference to a crash involving a box truck and a bicyclist on E. Highway 80 near Bandera Park St.

Officers arrived and located a 2019 Freightliner box truck stopped on the side of the road and a bicyclist laying in the roadway. The truck was heading west on E. Highway 80 when it struck the bicyclist, who was in the westbound lane.

Next of kin notification has been made and the bicyclist, 28-year-old Richard Charles Simmons of Abilene, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the truck was uninjured.
