DPS: Mereta Woman Killed in Head on Crash Sunday

SAN ANGELO, TX – A woman from Mereta was killed in a head-on crash Sunday morning.

According to a crash report from the Texas Department of Public Safety, on June 4, 2023, at around 9:40 a.m., DPS Troopers were dispatched to FM1692, just 1 mile north of Mereta, following a report of a major crash.

Upon arriving at the scene, the troopers discovered a 2020 Ford Explorer that had crashed head-on with a 2011 Freightliner Semi Truck hauling a trailer.

The driver of the Explorer, Angela Hollon, 46, of Mereta, was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Susan Werner on the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

The truck driver, Juan Antonio Martinez Garza, 32, from El Realito, Mexico, was taken to Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo with non-incapacitating injuries.

After conducting their investigation, the troopers determined that for unknown reasons, the Explorer was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of FM 1692. The Semi and towed trailer were traveling southbound in the correct lane. The Explorer crashed with the semi in the southbound lane.

At the time of the crash, the weather was clear, and the road was dry. The speed limit in this area is 75 mph. Along with DPS, the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office and the Mereta Volunteer Fire Department assisted in working the crash.
