MERTZON, TX — San Antonio news stations report that the three who died in the plane crash northwest of Mertzon on Saturday night, Nov. 25, were in the same family. Killed were the father, Jeremy Sanchez, 36; mother Alyse Marie Sanchez, 35; and the couple’s 10-year-old daughter Katrina Sanchez. The 1964 Piper Cherokee was registered to Alyse as part of a partnership, according to FAA records.
The Piper Cherokee took off from Reagan County Airport Saturday just before 6:20 p.m. and crashed 10 minutes later near County Road 411. The last recorded altitude from the Piper’s transponder was at 3,500 feet MSL, about 1,000 feet above the ground. It was dark when the crash occurred.
The crash followed a long day of flying for the Sanchez family that began with a 10 a.m. takeoff from Las Cruces, New Mexico. For more on the details of the crash, read about the Final Fatal Flight of Cherokee N7763W.
