Oversize Load Strikes Overpass in San Angelo, Driver Arrested

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Texas Department of Transportation reports that an oversized load crash with the LP 378 overpass above southbound US Highway 87 caused minor structural damage and led to traffic disruptions Thursday afternoon.

The crash, which occurred just before 5 p.m., led to the closure of the southbound US 87 left lane, although the LP 378 overpass remains open to traffic.

TxDOT announced that maintenance crews are scheduled to conduct further repairs on Friday morning to address the damages caused by the collision.

The accident involved a southbound 18-wheeler transporting an oversized load that struck the overpass at the crossings just before the US 87/277 split.

According to this morning’s booking report, Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers arrested 58-year-old William Barfield on Thursday evening. Barfield faces charges for violating Bridge/Underpass Clearance IAT regulations. He was jailed at 6:28 p.m. and was later released after posting a $500 bond at 10:43 p.m.

It remains unclear if Barfield’s arrest is directly related to the oversized load crash.
