Driver Cited After Crashing Into Pole While Distracted by Phone

SAN ANGELO, TX — A driver escaped injury but was cited after crashing into a telephone pole while distracted by his phone at the intersection of Martin Street and North Jefferson, according to police.

San Angelo police said the driver of a black Kia Rio was traveling eastbound on Martin Street when he looked down at his phone and failed to maintain his lane. The vehicle left the roadway, struck a guide wire anchoring a telephone pole, and ran up the wire, causing the car to flip.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the Kia Rio, refused medical transport and did not report injuries at the scene. He was cited for failure to maintain a single lane and for driving with an invalid or suspended license.

AEP is expected to repair the damaged telephone pole and guide wires. No power outages or additional property damage were immediately reported.
