DPS Issues Correction in Irion County Fatal Crash, Victim Identified as San Angelo Man

BARNHART, TX — The Texas Department of Public Safety has issued a correction to its initial report on a fatal crash in Irion County that left one driver dead and another injured Thursday morning.

DPS now confirms the victim was 30-year-old Austin Ray Sanchez of San Angelo, not Eden as previously reported. Sanchez was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Donna Smith.

The crash happened at 7:07 a.m. on U.S. 67, about two miles west of Barnhart. According to investigators, a 2026 Ford F-250 driven by Kristen Suzanne Upchurch, 38, of McCamey, was traveling east when it crossed into the wrong lane and struck Sanchez’s 2023 Ford F-150.

Upchurch suffered minor injuries and was transported to Reagan County Memorial Hospital.

Trooper Juan Solis of the Texas Highway Patrol is investigating the crash with assistance from the Irion County Sheriff’s Office. DPS reported the weather was clear and road conditions were dry at the time.
