2 Killed in Crash Outside Merkel

MERKEL, TX - Two people were killed Sunday evening in a crash on Interstate 20 near Merkel after their pickup truck towing a trailer struck a semi-truck while overtaking it and then overturned, the Texas Department of Public Safety reported.

Charles Murray, 80, and Deborah Murray, 67, both of Coldspring, Texas, were pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash on Interstate 20 in the Merkel city limits in Taylor County about 7:41 p.m. Sunday, July 19. Both were wearing seatbelts.

The Murrays were traveling westbound in a 2019 Ford F-250 pickup towing a trailer. The other vehicle was a 2012 International truck tractor towing a semi-trailer driven by Leonide Samon Soto, 49, of Houston. Soto was not injured.

A preliminary investigation found that the pickup was overtaking the semi-truck when its driver failed to allow adequate space before merging in front of the other vehicle. The trailer being towed by the pickup struck the semi-truck. After the collision, the pickup entered a side skid, left the roadway and overturned.

The crash occurred on a clear, dry evening. The posted speed limit is 75 mph. No other injuries were reported.
