HALE COUNTY, TX — A 16-year-old Hale Center boy was killed Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 27 in Hale County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The crash occurred at about 2:09 p.m. near mile marker 44.
According to a preliminary investigation, a 2023 Dodge Ram pickup towing a trailer was traveling north in the left lane of I-27. A 2008 Chevrolet Silverado, also traveling north in the left lane, approached the pickup and trailer from behind and collided with the rear of the trailer.
The 16-year-old driver of the Silverado was transported to Covenant Health Hospital in Plainview, where he was later pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash. DPS said he was not wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the Dodge Ram, 20-year-old Jimmy Garza of Lubbock, was not injured. DPS said Garza was wearing a seat belt.
The crash occurred under clear weather and dry road conditions. The posted speed limit was 75 mph.
The crash remains under investigation.
