Man Killed After Van Runs Off FM 600 in Jones County

JONES COUNTY, TX — A man was killed Monday morning when the van he was driving ran off Farm-to-Market Road 600, struck a concrete culvert, and came to rest in a drainage canal, the Texas Department of Public Safety reported.

George Matthew Thorpe, 37, of Vidalia, Louisiana, was pronounced deceased at the scene at 8:20 a.m. by Justice of the Peace Cheryl Guernsey. He was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected, DPS stated.

The single-vehicle crash occurred about 6:10 a.m. on FM 600 at County Road 223, east of Avoca. Thorpe was driving a 2012 Ford Econoline passenger van northbound when it entered a sharp curve. He failed to negotiate the curve, overcorrected to the left, left the roadway and lost control, according to a preliminary DPS investigation.

Weather was clear, and the roadway was dry. The posted speed limit is 70 mph. No other vehicles were involved, and no one else was injured.
