San Angelo Man Shoots Up his Empty Closet with Rifle

A San Angelo man is behind bars after unloading a rifle at his closet.

On Wednesday, Oct. 14, just before 10:15 p.m., San Angelo Police were dispatched to the 1700 block of W. Avenue J. for the report of several shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers searched the area but could not locate any origin or evidence of gunfire. When they were about to leave, dispatch received a call from a resident in the same area who was concerned about yelling and loud noises coming from a neighbor’s house. Officers located the residence in question and heard a man call for help. The man sounded distressed, and after several unsuccessful attempts at making contact with the man, the officers entered the residence and discovered several spent shell casings on the floor and bullet holes throughout the house.

Soon after, officers responded to the back of the residence after hearing a man say he had someone at gunpoint inside a bedroom closet. Officers located the man, later identified as 32-year-old Michael Fort, laying on the floor with a high-powered rifle pointed into the closet. Police searched the entire residence but no one other than Fort was inside.

Fort appeared to be distressed and was transported to Shannon Medical Center by ambulance for evaluation. He was later released by medical staff and transported by ffficers to the Tom Green County Jail and charged with discharging a firearm in the city limits.
