Fake News Site and Stories Hit San Angelo

San Angelo citizens beware. A false news site and Facebook page, San Angelo Breaking, is spreading false news, and some of the information being used comes from local media sites, including ours.

Sgt. Cade Solsbery, public information officer for the San Angelo Police Department, said over the weekend, two fake news stories about incidents in San Angelo surfaced on Facebook. The first story was about a car crash with three fatalities and seven injuries. The second referenced a shooting at a park where six people were killed and 10 wounded.

“The San Angelo Police Department has not responded to any calls like this and these stories are not real,” stated Solsbery.

Solsbery added that there are several stories from local media outlets in addition to these fake stories posted on the site, so SAPD wants citizens to be aware of this page. SAPD also wishes to remind citizens, in the event these types of incidents occur, valid stories will be found on the websites and Facebook pages of San Angelo’s verified local media outlets, as well as SAPD’s Facebook page.

Those who count on veracity in the postings on Facebook might as well seek wisdom in the scattering of chicken bones or look in tea leaves. It is useful as a social playtoy, and little else.

It's just some dumb high schoolers with nothing better to do while on their break than to post fake news stories to get a rise out of people.
