Driver in Horrific Northside Fatal Crash Indicted for Causing Death

SAN ANGELO, TX – A San Angelo Man has been indicted for killing a woman while he was fleeing from police.

According to court documents, on Mar. 4, a Tom Green County grand jury indicted Steven Baros, 32, for possession of a controlled substance and evading arrest using a vehicle resulting in a death.

The indictment came after the crash that occurred on Jan. 25. On that day an officer with the San Angelo Police Department was patrolling on N. Chadbourne when he spotted a silver Ford pickup traveling at a rate of speed traveling south.

The officer attempted to pull over the vehicle but instead the Ford went faster. The officer noted in an affidavit that the pickup was swerving in and out of traffic at a speed that the officer deemed to be dangerous.

This is when Baros, the driver of the truck, smashed into a white Ford escape that was crossing the intersection at 19th and N. Chadbourne. Due to the crash the driver of the escape, Kristine Rodriguez, was killed.

Baros survived the crash but was hospitalized. While in the hospital he told one officer that "he had a little rock" that was located inside of his wallet. The "rock" was found and tested. Results of the test came back positive for methamphetamine.

When asked why he was driving so fast and ran from the cop, Baros answered that he just wanted to go home.

Baros was then arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and evading arrest using a vehicle resulting in a death. He his still in the Tom Green County Detention Facility on a  $160,000 bond.

This isn't the first time Baros has seriously hurt someone in a crash. In 2011 Baros crashed a car on E. 21st st. and then ran away following the crash. Due to this crash a man suffered extensive leg damage which forced him to have a number of surgeries. Baros was put on deferred adjudication but finished the probation in 2017.

Baros' next court appearance has not been scheduled as of Mar. 17.
