San Angelo Man Indicted on Several Crimes Including Lewd Assault and Aggravated Assault

 

SAN ANGELO, TX- A San Angelo man has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for several crimes including sexual assault of a child and aggravated assault against a public servant.

On January 16, 2022, officers with the San Angelo Police Department were dispatched to North Pope Street for a reported shooting. The responding officers located the victim lying on the floor inside the residence who had been shot in the back. The victim was transported to Shannon Hospital for her injuries.  Investigators learned from an officer that the victim had been shot by the defendant, identified as Luis Herrera.

Herrera was located at the 700 block of Spaulding Street in San Angelo and when officers arrived, Herrera shot a firearm several times from inside the trailer. After a standoff with the San Angelo SWAT team and a “Crisis Negotiation Team”, Herrera was taken into custody.

Luis Herrera has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for the shooting that took place on North Pope Street and 4 counts of aggravated assault against a public servant for shooting at officers who responded to the residence on Spaulding Street.

Herrera has also been indicted for sexual assault of a child after penetrating the sexual organ and the anus of a child who was younger than 17 years old.

Luis Herrera was booked into the Tom Green County Detention Facility on January 17, 2022 and is still currently an inmate. He is being held on $1,450,000.00 bond.

In all, Herrera faces 4 first-degree felonies and 3 second-degree felonies.

Aggravated assault of a public servant is a first-degree felony is punishable by 5 to 99 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000.00. Sexual assault of a child and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon are both second-degree felonies punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.00.
