FRISCO, TX — A Collin County grand jury has indicted 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony for murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet in April, officials announced Tuesday.
Anthony, a former Frisco Centennial High School student, was arrested following the April incident at Kuykendall Stadium. Authorities said he stabbed Metcalf, a Frisco Memorial High School athlete, during a confrontation at the event. Anthony was later released from jail on a reduced bond of $250,000, down from $1 million.
The indictment advances the case to trial, where Anthony faces a potential sentence of 5 to 99 years or life in prison if convicted. His attorney, Mike Howard, said Anthony acted in self-defense and looks forward to presenting the full context in court.
Witness statements in the case describe a verbal dispute escalating after Metcalf reportedly told Anthony to move from under a school tent. Anthony allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest after a physical exchange.
Anthony remains under house arrest with an ankle monitor and must request permission to leave his home. He graduated high school in May but did not attend the ceremony.
Due to the case’s high-profile nature and racial tensions, officials have raised the possibility of moving the trial outside Collin County. That decision will be made by the presiding judge, according to the district attorney.
