SAN ANGELO, TX — Prosecutors allege a woman charged in the 2024 suffocation death of her infant daughter told a witness she hoped her current pregnancy would “replace the loss of her daughter,” according to KHOU 11 and KPRC 2 in Houston.
The claim surfaced during a probable cause hearing for Destiny Campos, 20, who was arrested June 20 and remains in the Harris County Jail on a $300,000 bond. Her co-defendant, Jeremy Fancher, 38, was arrested the next day in San Angelo after deputies issued a public alert. He is being held in the Tom Green County Jail on an $850,000 bond, awaiting transfer to Harris County to face a murder charge.
The charges stem from the May 26, 2024, death of 4-month-old Brookelynn Fancher, who was found unresponsive in a dresser drawer at a motel on Rancho Mission Drive near Bellaire Boulevard in west Harris County. According to KHOU 11, the infant had been placed in the drawer repeatedly, and towels were used to muffle her cries. The medical examiner ruled her cause of death as suffocation.
Campos allegedly admitted during questioning that she had placed the baby in the drawer on multiple occasions. Prosecutors also stated that the child was placed there so Campos and Fancher could have “personal time together.” A motel housekeeper told investigators she saw the infant crying in the drawer on more than one occasion prior to the baby’s death. It was revealed in the hearing that Campos is seven months pregnant.
KPRC 2 reported that Fancher contacted the station via Facebook weeks before his arrest, claiming the baby was alive when he left the room to buy food and that Campos fled the hotel screaming when he returned. "I grabbed her (Brookelyn) up and immediately began giving CPR," Fancher stated in his message.
His account conflicts with other statements Campos gave to media and investigators.
Brookelynn’s grandmother, Lisa Farrell, told KHOU 11 that both parents share blame. “They both did that baby dirty, they should both be in jail” Farrell said. "They all could've done something, but nobody did nothing."
"I hope they spend the duration of the time that she (Brookelyn) lost in jail," Farrell told KPRC2. "She's never gonna have her graduation, she's not gonna have a prom, she is never gonna have a wedding, she never gonna have a first born. She lost all that because of their stupidity."
Also arrested was Marilyn Jennifer Mork, identified as Fancher’s current girlfriend. She was charged with hindering apprehension for allegedly helping conceal Fancher from authorities. According to jail records, Mork was booked into the Tom Green County Jail and has since posted bond.
