MCALLEN, TX — A man armed with an assault rifle opened fire on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s McAllen Station early Monday and was fatally shot by federal officers, police said.
The gunman, identified as Ryan Louis Mosqueda, 27, fired “many dozens” of rounds at the building and agents inside around 6 a.m., McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said at a news conference. Mosqueda did not enter the building.
No federal officers were injured, but McAllen police officer Ismael Garcia, a 10-year veteran, sustained a knee injury, possibly from a bullet or shrapnel, and was in stable condition, Rodriguez said.
Authorities recovered additional weapons and ammunition from Mosqueda’s vehicle, a white car with Michigan license plates that contained spray-painted writing officers could not decipher.
Mosqueda, who had connections to an address in Weslaco, Texas, about 16 miles east of McAllen, had been reported missing hours before the shooting.
The FBI is investigating the incident. A motive has not been determined, but the FBI’s San Antonio office said there was “currently no threat to public safety that we are aware of.”
Flights at McAllen International Airport were delayed Monday morning because police restricted traffic near the station.
