Abilene Suspect Arrested After Firing at Police

ABILENE, TX — A man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly firing at Abilene police officers serving an arrest warrant, striking a SWAT vehicle’s windshield, authorities said.

Around 5 p.m. Aug. 13, members of the Abilene Police Narcotics Unit were serving the warrant at a home in the 2200 block of Bel Air Drive. While officers evacuated residents, a shot was fired from inside the home, believed to be from the suspect, police said.

Officers cleared the residence of all occupants except the suspect, who remained inside. The Abilene Police SWAT Team was called in, and at about 5:56 p.m., a shot damaged the windshield of the SWAT armored vehicle.

Negotiations with the suspect lasted more than two hours before he surrendered without incident at about 8:20 p.m., according to police. No officers or civilians were injured.

The suspect, 31-year-old Austin Heuermann, faces 11 charges: one count of aggravated assault on a public servant, two counts of possession of methamphetamine (warrant), three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, and three counts of evading arrest or detention with a vehicle.
