HOUSTON, TX — An 11-year-old boy died Sunday after police said he was shot while playing a doorbell prank with friends in east Houston late Saturday night.
The shooting happened around 11 p.m. near Mimbrough and Fidelity streets. According to Houston police, a group of children had been ringing doorbells in the neighborhood when someone came out of a house and opened fire as the kids ran away.
The boy was taken to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and later died Sunday afternoon.
Police said a man was detained at the home where the shots were fired. He was questioned by homicide detectives but not immediately arrested. Officers executed a search warrant and collected several rifles and handguns from the home.
According to a report made by KHOU, HPD Homicide Detective Sgt. Michael Cass said the evidence does not suggest self-defense. “In my opinion, it does not look like any type of self-defense. It wasn’t close to the house, so it’ll more than likely be a murder charge,” he said.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case for possible charges. Detectives are also examining surveillance footage and seeking additional information from neighbors.
