DALLAS, TX — A football player for South Oak Cliff was arrested for shooting a teammate just hours after they won a state championship.
Xavier Mayfield, 18, is being held in the Dallas County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after firing a shot that hit his teammate in the neck.
The shooting was reportedly accidental, according to WFAA in Dallas. The TV station reported that players were at a home celebrating the title when the shooting occurred.
According to an arrest affidavit, Mayfield was holding a rifle in a bathroom when he accidentally fired a bullet through the wall and into a bedroom, where the victim was standing.
A witness reportedly said that Mayfield claimed the rifle’s safety was on moments before the gun went off.
The victim was reportedly listed in stable condition.
Mayfield was arrested at the scene and is being held in the Dallas County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
Mayfield recorded an interception in South Oak Cliff’s 35-19 win over Richmond Randle on Saturday in the Class 5A Division II state final.
