San Angelo Man Jailed for Reckless Abuse of 6-Month-Old Puppy

SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo man has been arrested for allegedly abusing a dog.

Sonny Carrillo, 48, was arrested by the San Angelo Police Department for cruelty to non-livestock animals after he was accused of publicly abusing a 6-month-old puppy.

According to court documents, on Jan. 22, 2026, two San Angelo police officers responded to the 3400 block of North Bryant Boulevard for a report of a male subject beating a puppy in a parking lot. When officers arrived, they detained the subject, identified as Carrillo, seized the puppy, which is described as less than 6 months old, and identified witnesses.

The investigator spoke with one witness, who stated she saw Carrillo yanking on the puppy. When she confronted Carrillo, she claimed that he started using foul language and slammed the puppy’s face into the ground. He then yanked the puppy upwards and picked up the dog, she said.

The witness told the investigator she believed the puppy was traumatized, and she explained that the puppy would not move for Carrillo.

The second witness told the investigator that she also saw Carrillo yank and drag the puppy across the road. When she stopped her vehicle, Carrillo eventually picked up the dog and began yelling in its face, she said.

The investigator spoke with Carrillo, who was handcuffed and in the backseat of a patrol vehicle, where he explained that the puppy stopped in the middle of the road. He claimed that he was trying to explain to the dog that they could not stop there. He also denied slamming the puppy’s head into the ground. He then refused to answer any more questions.

Carrillo was arrested and booked into the Tom Green County Jail on Jan. 22, 2026, and is currently being held without bond.
